Rankings

The following sites can be used to view in season team rankings & to gauge the strength of an opponent. Three important notes when viewing any ranking system at the youth level:

  • Someone has to enter results somewhere, so data can always be wrong.
  • If there are no notes on the logic used to determine the ranking, its anyone's guess.
  • It is still youth sports & a weaker team can beat a stronger team at any time. A few off games can have a huge impact here.

All rankings should be taken with a grain of salt.

How to Use it

  • On the home page, use the top navigation bar to select Ratings
  • Select the year, level, & Tier (default to Tier 4 here to get the broadest results)

Pros

  • This is the site CHC uses to determine States at the end of the year
  • Has a score predictor that can be used as a preview
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Website is a bit dated
  • Not great notes on the logic behind rankings
  • Tends to take 1-2 months of play before the 1st iteration comes out.

A note on ranking logic from the site:

Initially, each rated team is assigned a rating that is based on what Tier it is playing in (1-4). This is primarily used to seed the initial ratings and has little to do with where a team’s rating ultimately will settle in over time. As each game is played, the rating of each team is adjusted based on the goal differential and the rating of each team.

If the rating of your team is higher than your opponent, you are expected to win and win by a projected differential. If your team wins by a differential that the projected margin, your team rating will fall and your opponent’s rating will rise.

This rating methodology most closely resembles the player rating system used by the United States Tennis Association.

How to Use it

  • On the home page, use the Team Rankings section on the left hand side.
  • Select your Age & then State from the next page

Pros

  • US wide scores for out of state use
  • Rating logic caps scoring differential (more important at younger levels)
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Relies on scoring results from individual states/ teams.
  • Recent games take 1-2 weeks to hit rating logic.
  • Has no bearing on your actual CHC rankings

A note on ranking logic from the site:

MYHockey's ratings are computed mathematically, with no subjective weighting or human determined values. MYHockey rates teams based upon how well they play against other teams and how good those teams are. These two factors are "AGD" or "average goal differential" and "SCHED" or "strength of schedule". AGD is currently calculated by accumulating the goal differential of each game, to a maximum of 7, and divides it by the number of games played. Using a max game goal differential of 7 does "penalize" teams that blow out opponents, but this is common in rating systems as it takes away the incentive for teams to run up scores and allows them to have a bad game by capping the mathematical damage. The strength of schedule is computed by averaging the rating of each game opponent. AGD and SCHED are added together to compute a team's rating.
