Mites New Canaan Classic
NEW CANAAN - HYHA’s Mite B team braved the elements recently to come away with an outdoor win in their own version of a winter classic.
“Our kids were really excited,” said Coach Robert Bellucci. “Playing outside is such a great experience for them.” Hamden, down one of its strong skaters in Sebastian Scialla, came out flying against home favorite New Canaan. After falling behind the team was bolstered by a great performance by goaltender Jacob Toro. “He was awesome in net today & really kept us in the game in the 1st. I think wearing the winter hat helped.” laughed Coach Bellucci. Aiding Toro was offensive bursts by teammates Ryan Apuzzo & Michael Reed.
After falling behind in the 1st half Hamden turned to its defensive pressure to keep the game close, with James Bellucci and Mason Loveland leading the way. As the 1st half of the game came to a close Hamden was down but not out.
In the 2nd half Hamden again came out flying, with Julian Santiago & Jayce Newman all over the ice. After another strong half Hamden pulled off the come from behind win and stamped a win on a Mite outdoor victory. “The kids all skating hard the entire game. It was a fun one to win.” said Coach Bellucci.
Fun indeed, not much beats an outdoor victory.
